Name: Mark A. Walker
Genre: Jazz

City: Washington
State: DC
Comment: Bassist, Mark A. Walker has recently released his debut solo project entitled "Forever Yours" on independent MPM Music. A collaborative effort by Walker and Los Angeles based producer, writer and keyboardist Tim Carmon, the project highlights the intricate styling and spiritually based tone of Walker's gift. Born on March 26, 1967, in Arlington, Virginia, Walker began his musical journey on drums, but at age 11, began playing bass guitar in church. Not long after his introduction to the instrument, his family moved to York, Pennsylvania- a small manufacturing town mired in football and rock music. It was there Walker met Leonard "Fuzzy" Rankin a local guitarist, who mentored him, and helped sharpen his skills and stage presence. Soon, Walker was wowing audiences with antics likened to the legendary Jimmy Hendricks. Walker says, "Being the son of a Hebrew-Pentecostal evangelist and pastor didn't make it easy for me to hear the music and artists most musicians credit as influences, so most of my influences were local church musicians and Gospel artists. The bottom line was, if it wasn't Gospel, it wasn't played in our house." Walker's primary mentor was his uncle David Bouknight, who was a prominent church musician in the Washington, D.C. area. He also includes Abraham Laboriel, Andrew Gouché, and York, Pennsylvania's Lee Jones, among bassists he studied. Walker listened intently and played along with the recordings of Gospel, Jazz, and R&B artists, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Institutional Radio Mass Choir, Commissioned, James Cleveland, The Winans, Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Stevie Wonder, and George Duke. Soon the young bassist began playing in his high school's jazz ensemble, and for local church groups in the Tri-State area. A tremendous break came when he returned to the D.C. area, after graduating high school. While playing in jam sessions at Howard University, he was noticed and petitioned to tour with rising star, Yolanda Adams. Soon Walker garnered respect and recognition, both on the road and in studio. He toured with Shai (1993-94), and Kenny Latimore (1995-96), and frequently played for Ms. Adams (1992-1998). Live performances, accompanying the artists who'd given him a platform, on MTV, BET, the Disney Channel, the Stellar, NAACP, and Vision Awards soon followed. Walker was later hired by jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright for an international tour. He was elated to perform In Tokyo with Albright and singer Lalah Hathaway. "The energy of the audience was unbelievable",Walker said." It was one encore after another". Impressed with Walker's skill and dedication to his calling, veteran Gospel artist/writer/arranger/producer Richard Smallwood, sought Walker when preparing to record the first installment of the "Vision" projects, "Adoration: Live in Atlanta". Walker appears on all of the Stellar winning, Grammy and Dove nominated Richard Smallwood & Vision recordings. Walker continues to work with Gerald Albright, singer Will Downing, Richard Smallwood, William Becton & Judah, Tanya Blunt, Knagui, Mya, and Reverend Mal Williams. Mr. Walker proudly plays, and endorses Neuser Basses.
